The level of English proficiency among
Malaysian students is said to be deteriorating. Teaching English to technical
or vocational students is also not easy especially if the lecturers are experts
in the language and not the content. This English Teacher Training Programme
that involves three TVET agencies- polytechnics, community colleges and
vocational colleges- is specially designed to bridge the gap between English
language and students’ content area. At the end of the programme, we hope to
develop master trainers who can assist other lecturers to improve the teaching
and learning quality of English subject or other subject using English as the
medium of instruction. This in return, is hoped to improve the students’
English level.

It's a very pleasant surprise to be able to undergo the course at WKC in London. I'm very sure this will be a very rewarding and enriching experience. As part of the program involves classroom observations and industry visits, I expect to learn from my English counterparts approaches to teaching non-native speakers of English. I hope to adapt the English model and put it to practice in Malaysia.

I expect
to learn a lot from this course, not only from the formal sessions with the
tutors but also from the all people i meet along the way, the conversations,
and the culture. I believe that this stint would enrich my knowledge of the
English language and culture, in particular. I also hope that this 2-week
experience would mould me into a better material developer, lesson planner and
ultimately a better educator.
Politeknik Kota Bharu
I hope I would observe how contents and language integrated
learning (CLIL) is actually implemented at Westminster Kingsway College, London
(WKC). We were exposed with the contents of CLIL in phase 1 in Penang. I found
it very eye opening and beneficial for polytechnic lecturers as well as the
students because through CLIL approaches, students are able to learn English
across their curriculum. It is also hoped that the knowledge and experiences
gained would help me and the team design an effective module to train our
colleagues at our respective institutions.
It's like a dream come true to be chosen to undergo this program with 19 other lecturers of great calibre. However, as uncle Ben would say, "With great power comes great responsibility", and in this case, it is not power but fortune we were getting, and it is a big investment on us to bring back the goods from UK. What goods? Knowledge, experience, and maybe even an ESL network. On a personal level, I hope this program would result in high yields of inspiration, motivation and forward looking strategies to strengthen English in the TVET sector.
Looking
forward to exploring new, innovative and feasible ways of integrating core
content with English language lessons especially for second language learners.
It is also hoped that the first-hand experience obtained in observing how the
native speaking countries conduct their English language lessons for non-native
speakers as well as getting closer to the English culture would be able to
serve fruitful to bring some difference in Malaysian English language
classrooms.
I am looking forward to observe and learn how the trainers use CLIL in teaching the non-native speakers of English especially in hospitality field. I hope to get relevant teaching techniques and materials to be adopted and adapted to suit our students' level. I also would like to see the environment that can trigger students’ interest to learn English.
Authentic
learning or teaching experiences, student-teacher interactions and material
development are some of the important elements of an effective educational
experience. With this in mind, I hope to be able to share what I have observed
based on these elements in Westminster Kingsway College with all my colleagues
back home.
Politeknik Kuala Terengganu
I
just can’t believe my luck! I am in the list of 20 participants selected to
join the second phase of the course.
Looking back at the first phase, which was very beneficial and
meaningful to me, I strongly believe the second phase would bring more
benefits. I expect more exposure on how
to administer CLIL effectively in my classroom and hopefully I’ll be exposed to
more techniques and activities that can be implemented in my teaching.
I
hope that the two weeks spent in Westminster Kingsway College will open
opportunities for me to learn something new that helps to broaden my views and
enrich my knowledge in the teaching of English to technical students. In
addition, I look forward to having interesting and beneficial materials that
can be adopted and adapted in my very next lessons.
It
would have been great to get formal training on teaching and learning
methodologies together with the exposure to them being practiced in real life.
Sometimes theories would look marvelous on papers but the environment and
situations might deter them from being fully practical. I would like to really
experience how our trainers would practice what they preach and how successful
the lessons would be in a second language learning environment. With the
exposure, I do hope to share with my colleagues ideas that really work.
London is certainly a
place to visit especially as an English teacher. To be able to mingle,
communicate and mix around the native speakers of English would
undoubtedly be a great experience. I have always wanted to totally 'immerse'
myself into this English speaking environment as I believe it will not only
enhance my speaking confidence but also learn on the effective teaching
techniques from the expert tutors there. This exposure will help me with
my teaching and learning skill and use it for the betterment and benefits of
the Malaysian students especially in the Community Colleges.
Politeknik Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah
I was chosen to be one of the final 20 who are
going to London to experience how CLIL is being implemented in Westminster
Kingsway College (WKC). I hope I can absorb as much as I can in terms of
Teaching & Learning from the lecturers there. Later, I hope I can use this
experience and develop materials to be shared and adapted for the betterment of
teaching and learning of English for both Lecturers and students in the
polytechnic.
As
materials development is my cup of tea, I hope to be exposed to more activities
that will trigger other relevant ideas for the Malaysian context. It is also
hoped that the classroom visits will show how differentiation and language
support can be carried out in the teaching and learning process in a second or
foreign language classroom. I would also like to see how the trainers encourage
and get less motivated students to respond and get involved in activities.
Being
selected for London is a big deal and naturally my expectations are just as
big, if not bigger. I expect to gain some new pedagogical insights to ELT and
to adapt or adopt the ideas to be used in classes here. It’d be great to be
able to share the knowledge and experience gained in London with colleagues
back in Malaysia. And of course, to have a blast in London!
Kolej Komuniti Sabak Bernam
My expectation for this course is to gain as much
knowledge as I can about CLIL. I would like to gain deeper understanding on how
I can develop suitable materials for my L2 learners. Besides that, I would like
to know how differentiation is conducted in WKC and how can I apply or adapt it
in the Malaysian classroom context.
I am so lucky to be chosen as one
of 20 lucky English lecturers to get the first-hand experience, not as a
student, but as a trainer. I hope that I am able to get all the knowledge,
skills and creative ideas and ways on how to teach our students in a better way
and after that share it with my friends in Malaysia.
My two week stint in London will be an experience
that is a chance of a lifetime. I expect to gain knowledge, experience and
exposure that will help me to be a better educator. My vocational
students who will be graduating as skilled individuals, need the language
ability to perform in the working world. Hence, understanding CLIL and
differentiation and applying them in my classes will be beneficial for my
students to use the language more effectively.
Politeknik Ibrahim Sultan
I feel truly blessed to be chosen as one of the participants for this program. I look forward to observe the teaching and learning approaches in WKC; which I could apply in my polytechnic classrooms. I also hope to adopt and adapt as much as possible the culture and lifestyle of UK.

Through the second
phase of this course, I aim to discover and adapt new and novel approaches to
English language teaching that can inspire my students to learn better and have
more fun in doing so. Apart from that, I would like to find out how learners in
the UK learn not just English but life long skills that can empower them
economically and socially. Finally, I hope to put all these new knowledge and
experiences to good use within the community that I am working with.

The first phase English Teacher Training Programme in Penang was not only fun but most importantly open my eyes on the impacts that CLIL can have in the teaching & learning process. Being selected for the second phase training in WKC, London is really once in a lifetime chance. Apart from the bucket list of the personal things that I would do there, I hope to learn as much as I can from this invaluable trip. I hope that I to get a better picture of CLIL and share the gained knowledge and experience with my colleagues. London, here we come!
